History of Washington County

Washington County Today

Today's Washington County integrates its beauty and historical legacies with the demands of 21st Century life. Our climate and gentle hills produce a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables, especially the corn for which we are famous. The Ohio River outlines our southern border where Riverboats float gracefully as they did a century ago.

Washington County can still boast the 18th century words of Rufus Putnam: "...a country of the most pleasant climate and of the rarest beauty and enduring charm." The year 2000 will see the dedication of the Putnam Street Bridge.
