The Health Alert Network (HAN) is a nationwide, integrated information and communications system serving as a platform for distribution of health alerts, dissemination of prevention guidelines and other information, distance learning, national disease surveillance, and electronic laboratory reporting, and for Center for Disease Control (CDC's) bioterrorism and other initiatives to strengthen state and local preparedness.
When complete, the Health Alert Network will ensure:
High-speed, secure Internet connections for local health officials, providing access to CDC's prevention recommendations, practice guidelines, and disease data; capacity for rapid and secure communications with first responder agencies and other health officials; and capacity to securely transmit surveillance, laboratory, and other sensitive data
On-line, Internet and satellite-based distance learning systems
Early warning broadcast alert systems
That public health agencies achieve high levels of organizational capacity
The Washington County "HUB" of the Health Alert Network is responsible for providing training and equipment to the following Southeastern Ohio Counties:

Coshocton
Harrison

Types of Training:
Disaster response training to police, fire, hospital, and health department personnel (geared toward response to bioterrorist occurrences)
Assistance in writing Health Department specific Emergency Response Plans and assistance in integrating their plan into the County Emergency Response Plan
Building a communication network within the professional community
Equipment
Alphanumeric pagers:
Training on pager capabilities and uses
How to respond to a page from Ohio Department of Health during a disaster/exercise.
Computer equipment:
The Health Alert Network has provided new computers and necessary training to seven local health departments
Distance Learning satellite units:
Two health departments in the Southeastern Region have been equipped with complete satellite downlink capability and operations training. This allows for "at home" disaster response/medical training.
