Washington County Health Department

Health Alert Network (HAN)
Betty King, Coordinator

The Health Alert Network (HAN) is a nationwide, integrated information and communications system serving as a platform for distribution of health alerts, dissemination of prevention guidelines and other information, distance learning, national disease surveillance, and electronic laboratory reporting, and for Center for Disease Control (CDC's) bioterrorism and other initiatives to strengthen state and local preparedness.

When complete, the Health Alert Network will ensure:
  • High-speed, secure Internet connections for local health officials, providing access to CDC's prevention recommendations, practice guidelines, and disease data; capacity for rapid and secure communications with first responder agencies and other health officials; and capacity to securely transmit surveillance, laboratory, and other sensitive data
  • On-line, Internet and satellite-based distance learning systems
  • Early warning broadcast alert systems
  • That public health agencies achieve high levels of organizational capacity
  • The Washington County "HUB" of the Health Alert Network is responsible for providing training and equipment to the following Southeastern Ohio Counties:

    Washington
    Coshocton
    Harrison
    Belmont
    Guernsey
    Jefferson
    Tuscarawas
    Muskingum
    Monroe
    Noble
    Morgan

    Types of Training:
  • Disaster response training to police, fire, hospital, and health department personnel (geared toward response to bioterrorist occurrences)
  • Assistance in writing Health Department specific Emergency Response Plans and assistance in integrating their plan into the County Emergency Response Plan
  • Building a communication network within the professional community
  • Equipment
  • Alphanumeric pagers:
  • Training on pager capabilities and uses
  • How to respond to a page from Ohio Department of Health during a disaster/exercise.
  • Computer equipment:
  • The Health Alert Network has provided new computers and necessary training to seven local health departments
  • Distance Learning satellite units:
  • Two health departments in the Southeastern Region have been equipped with complete satellite downlink capability and operations training. This allows for "at home" disaster response/medical training.
