Healthcare Providers

Healthcare providers should be proactive in delivering an equal standard of care for the prevention and management of disease.  All too often, disease prevention and the environmental investigation of disease are minimized in lieu of the treatment of disease and their symptoms.

Tobacco use, poor diet, and lack of physical activity are the leading "actual causes" of disease and death in the United States, yet each case is rarely emphasized or addressed by healthcare professionals before or after disease diagnosis.  It is estimated that approximately 70% of strokes, 71% of cancers, 82% of heart disease, and 91% of diabetes cases are likely avoidable by making healthy lifestyle choices.

Ounce of Prevention

The Ounce of Prevention toolkit provides healthcare providers with user-friendly nutrition and physical activity messages that should be shared while reviewing children's weight and height during routine well-child or other provider appointments.  The toolkit is appropriate for physicians, WIC, Child and Family Health Services and other children's health providers.

Washington County Physical Activity Resource Guide

the Washington County Physical Activity Resource Guide lists contact information for physical activity resources and facilities specific to Washington County.  The guides, which list municipal parks, walking paths and other resources, are great to distribute to patients when encouraging them to become more active, because it helps them locate the resources that are most accessible to them.
