CHILDREN SERVICES Placement is available to provide a safe, temporary home for children when efforts to provide in home services to the family has failed to adequately safeguard the children. Washington County Children Services typically has approximately 20 to 25 children in foster or kinship homes during any given month of the year. The agency strives to keep children in the homes of their parents, while providing services, if at all possible. However, if it is determined that a child must be placed out of their home, kinship and foster homes are then considered. These types of homes are considered to be safe, temporary homes for children while their families are working on issues such as parenting skills, housing, budgeting, and/or meeting medical needs, among others. The birth family of a child placed in a kinship or foster home is working on a reunification case plan so that any difficulties in the home are resolved sufficiently for the child to return home safely. A child may be placed in temporary kinship or foster homes for up to one year before a more permanent resolution is considered. Kinship is used to describe a home that is a relative or non-relative of the child that has a relationship or bond with the child and birth family. Foster homes are individuals licensed by the State; they must meet specific requirements before children can be placed in their home. Foster parents are special people who are interested in the welfare of children and provide a temporary home to help local children who have been abused or neglected.
