Procedure to Establish, Alter or Vacate a Road
To petition a road or section of road be established, altered, or vacated, you must first contact the Washington County Engineer's Office. The Washington County engineer will provide the petitioner a Road Vacation Petition Form that includes the description of the road or section of road to be vacated.
Required Signatures
The petitioner must gather thirteen signatures from property owners whose property lies close to the proximity of the road or section of road to be established, altered, or vacated. The petitioner must then return the completed form back to the Washington County Engineer's office.
County Commission Determination & Public Viewing
The Washington County Engineer will contact the Washington County Commissioners and the County Commissioners will schedule a public viewing of the road or section of road to be established, altered, or vacated. After the public viewing is held, the Washington County Commissioners will determine if the petition will improve the overall condition of the road.
If there are no reasons why the road of section of road should not be established, altered, or vacated, the Washington County Commissioners will adopt a resolution to continue with the project at their next weekly meeting.
